Welcome to another edition of “What’s Neue from 9 to 5”. In this segment, 9 questions would be about people’s opinion on general and everyday things, while the last 5 questions would be fairly chill and more tongue in cheek.

We here at Neue believe that every person out there has a story to tell.

This week, we find out What’s Neue with Ruby Chong (@rubyxchong), a well-known event vocalist from Brunei Darussalam. She’s a fresh MTeach (Master of Teaching) graduate from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and previously studied Physics at the University of Nottingham. She’s currently working as a freelance tutor.

One quote that she lives by is “shoot for the stars, so if you fall you land on a cloud”. According to her, she got this quote from her Chemistry teacher while she was in Year 11.

When asked what her drive in life was, she said it’s simply to lead a happy life.

Without further ado, let’s see how Ruby responds to this week’s #Neue9to5 questions.

The Tough 9’ers:

1. Everyone has a story. What’s yours?

I’ve always enjoyed singing since I was really young. I started singing in the bathroom when I was just 3 and I would try to hide it from my parents because I was really shy!

But eventually they found out, and was really supportive of me in honing my skills.

I would participate in competitions to gain more experience. And this fuelled my passion to pursue it as a career.

However, I realised that the music industry in Brunei was still underdeveloped unless I pursued it outside of the country.

I also grew fond of Physics. Ever since I was a teenager, I had always wanted to become a Physics educator.

Why, you ask? Well, it’s because it gives me a sense of satisfaction when students are able to grasp the concepts which they may have initially thought were difficult.

Hmm … come to think of it, everything that we do can be related to physics!

At the moment, I am very happy to be able to do two of my favourite things – teaching and part-time singing.

2. Do you follow your heart or your head?

It’s always a constant battle between following my heart and rationalising with my head.

I’d say that I probably follow my heart more than my head because I believe that sometimes if you overthink, you can miss out a lot in life.

3. Do you prefer talking over the phone or face to face?

Face to face because talking over the phone lacks the physical interaction and there are times I feel physical interaction is very important because sometimes talking over the phone could be misinterpreted, leading to misunderstandings.

4. What movies have you re-watched the most number of times?

This might come off as a surprise but I’ve yet to come across a movie that I’d rewatch many times over.

To be honest, I’m quite impatient when it comes to rewatching movies. Why? Well, because I’d find it frustratingly boring to sit through the whole thing again! Hehe!

*Editor’s note: When asked how many times she’d seen the 2018 movie ‘Avengers: Endgame’, she said: “Twice! Once here in Brunei, and the other time IMAX in Thailand.”

According to her, she was more excited with experiencing IMAX for the very first time rather than rewatching the whole movie again.

“After all, that Avengers movie is about 3 hours long!” she added.

5. If you could invent a holiday, what would it be?

“No IT Day”. This would include having to stay away from mobile phones, tablets, computers, etc.

Why? Because a lot of us are just “not present” these days (i.e. not being attentive with the people around us).

It seems as though most of us are “always” distracted, which in my opinion, shows a lack of respect for others.

6. What’s better: having high or low expectations?

Both! But it really depends on the situation.

If I am receiving my results, then I’d say LOW EXPECTATIONS!

Why? Because this helps avoid disappointment.

However, when it comes to things that I’m trying to achieve (or am working hard for), then I’d say HIGH EXPECTATIONS!

Why? Because it’ll motivate me and improve the quality of my work.

7. Which is better: being the boss or an employee?

I don’t think one is better than the other because I honestly believe that in order to be a good boss, you also need to experience being an employee.

But if I had to choose, I’d probably say being the boss because I like to motivate people to be at their best so that we can achieve our goals together.

8. What was the biggest life change you’ve gone through?

When I studied in Jerudong International School (JIS), I started to become aware of the importance of other things outside of my academics such as personal development, etc. I learned that there was more to life outside of education.

9. Would you rather be granted 3 wishes of your choice 10 years from today or be granted 1 wish today?

My initial answer would’ve been being granted 3 wishes even though I’d had to wait for another 10 years.

But I’ll go with being granted 1 wish today because life is, after all, unpredictable. Nobody knows what’s going to happen tomorrow!

As for what wish that would be, I’d wish for everyone around me to be blessed with great health.

The Easy 5’ers:

1. If you were given an air ticket to anywhere in the world but you’d then have to spend the rest of your life there … Where would it be?

It would have to be Bali, but the peaceful part of Bali. I travelled there recently and fell in love with the place (aside from the traffic woes).

There’s just so many things to do there! (… that’s if I choose not to relax the whole day away.)

2. Do you read reviews about a movie before deciding whether to watch it or not?

Most of the time I do. Sometimes, however, I let curiosity get the best of me and I spoil the movie for myself.

3. Would you rather be the best player on a horrible team or the worst player on a great team? What sport would you play?

Worst player on a great team because that means I will have more room for improvement. Furthermore, I’d get the chance to learn from others and improve myself. I used to be quite active playing netball.

4. What would you do if you couldn’t use the Internet or watch TV for a month?

I would spend a lot of time exercising, meal prepping, meeting up with friends, singing and practising musical instruments.

5. What was the last movie you saw? From that movie, what villain do you wish you could be?

Aladdin. And no! I don’t want to be any villain from that movie!

Bonus question: What would you like to say to all our Neue readers? Do you have any words or inspiration or a life story you’d like to share?

We all should spend less time on our mobile devices and start living in the present. We should respect the time of the people around you.
