Things come and go on the Internet every day. But every once in a while, something comes along that unites the world.
This time, it’s the #BottleCapChallenge.
By now, I’m sure that you have stumbled upon videos of people attempting this challenge on your social media feeds.
The Bottle Cap Challenge requires you to stand a bottle up, above head height, while you execute a spinning kick to the lid of the bottle, spinning the lid, and not knocking the bottle over.
At the time of publishing this article, the #BottleCapChallenge hashtag had over 250,000 posts on Instagram.
Admittedly, there have been a lot of spectacular as well as rather unsuccessful attempts at the challenge. (I know … I tried and failed … miserably!)
#BottleCapChallenge in Brunei
Erwan, one half of Brunei’s indie music duo ‘TheElleWan’, recently did #TheBottleCapChallenge at Hoco Agency’s office in Kiarong. He’s just one of many Bruneians who attempted the latest challenge.
Here’s the video:
As you can see we here at Hoco Agency are a fun bunch 🙂
So where did the craze come from?
It is believed that the craze originated on June 25 thanks to Taekwondo fighter and instructor Farabi Davletchin.
Daveltchin posted the slow-motion video to his Instagram account and the hashtag that accompanied that video suggests that he wanted the challenge to be called the #FaraKicksChallenge.
In the caption of the video, Daveltchin issued the challenge to among others, Jason Staham and Conor McGregor.
Here’s the video:
Challenge accepted
Jason Statham, who is best known for playing tough guys in action movies, managed to hack the challenge, responding to the call of US singer John Mayer.
“This thing landed on my head from @johnmayer but will quickly go to a couple of fellas we’ve seen do push ups badly,” the British actor wrote on Instagram.
Statham’s video on Instagram has already gained over 20 million views.
Here’s the video:
Blindfolded
Hong Kong’s action movie star Donnie Yen, who will be turning 56 years old this July 27, stepped the challenge up a notch by blindfolding himself.
His video, which was uploaded on July 3, has since been viewed over 3 million times and has over 650,000 likes.
Here’s the video:
Well you know what they say … You don’t mess with the ‘Ip Man’. (Side note: The ‘Ip Man 4’ movie is expected to be released by the end of this month.)
Probably fake but still pretty awesome!
Now let’s take a look at what Mariah Carey did:
The video, which was posted on her Instagram account on July 8, has been viewed more than 4.5 million times and has over 1 million likes.
But is the video legit?
Well, Joe Wolfe, a physicist specialising in the study of voice and musical instruments, said, “perhaps the air (or) other gas in the bottle is at high pressure and the cap is loosened to a point where a very small perturbation … triggers the release.”
Speaking to Popular Mechanics, the physicist emphasised that this was merely speculation and that he wasn’t entirely sure how Carey created her take on the challenge.
“You might want to consult an illusionist,” he added.
Regardless if the video was fake or doctored, you gotta admit that it’s pretty darn cool!
Let’s hear it from you
Nicole Lai, an avid reader of Neue, said: “There may be a lot of depressing things happening around the world.
“But I take comfort knowing that now and again, viral challenges such as the #BottleCapChallenge do pop up that unite human beings of all backgrounds all around the world.
“I’ll support any challenge so long as it doesn’t hurt anyone,” she added. “Remember the Cockroach Challenge?”
If you’re wondering what she’s referring to, she’s actually referring to a Neue story that was published recently – “Latest Internet Craze: Take A #Selfie With A Cockroach”.
Yep! It just a few months ago when we had people putting live cockroaches on their faces and taking selfies. (Gross! I know!)
