What’s one thing that you miss in Brunei since COVID-19?
For me, it’s munching on popcorn (either sweet or salty but never both!) in a cinema.
Going to the movies has always been my favourite pastime.
It’s my happy place. My escape. My quiet time. My ME time.
And so, I can truly empathise how heartbreaking it must have been for the management and staff of Brunei’s many cineplexes when they had to inform the public of the temporary closure because of COVID-19.
As far as I’m concerned, one post that perfectly encapsulated the mood at the time perfectly came from The Mall Cineplex.
“We’ve opened every single day for the past 15 years without fail – but we also promised everyone SAFETY FIRST. So, for the first time ever, The Mall Cineplex will be closing and suspending all screenings from today (after the 6pm last show),” the Mall Cineplex said in its Instagram account on a Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

The Mall Cineplex first opened its doors for business on February 6, 2004 with screenings of “The Last Samurai”, a movie in which actor Tom Cruise portrays a character named Captain Nathan Algren, who is hired to train the Japanese army to fight a Samurai rebellion. (Spoiler warning: He, however, ends up embracing the same Samurai culture which he was assigned to destroy!)
Another movie that was being screened at the time was “Paycheck”, a sci-fi action movie starring Ben Affleck … way before his (regretful?) Batman years.
Prior to the temporary closure because of COVID-19, I had planned to catch the movie “Bloodshot” (starring Vin Diesel).
This COVID-19 has indeed impacted all aspects of life. I hope that you’re all taking good care of yourselves – physically as well as mentally.
For you reading pleasure, I’ve compiled 3 of my favourite (and most viewed) movie-related articles below:
#1. “Who Is The Best Joker Of All Time?”

#2. “What Makes A Movie A Blockbuster Hit?”

#3. “Godzilla: 10 Surprising But True Facts”

Truthfully speaking, I do miss writing about movies and giving away freebies to Neue’s followers on social media.
When COVID-19 is over, let’s all show our support for Brunei cinemas.
How are you coping not going to the cinemas? For me, I’m ashamed to admit it but … I’ve been binge-watching “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness” on Netflix.
What about you?
I’d love to hear your side of the story. You can get in touch with the Neue team via e-mail or WhatsApp. Alternatively, you may drop a DM via Instagram @whatsneue.
