Boxing is all the rage right now in Brunei thanks to last month’s boxing tournament that was live streamed on imagine’s YouTube channel. And if you’re like me, I’m certain that you have caught the boxing fever and are itching to pick up boxing!

Boxing as an exercise offers incredible physical and mental benefits. So why not try a class today? Who knows, you may very well be Brunei’s next Rocky.

Here’s a look at our top picks of places where you can sharpen your boxing skills in Brunei.

#1. JAB Gym

Located on the 4th Floor of Pavo Point, JAB Gym is a state-of-the-art fitness facility that offers the highest level of boxing training, top-of-the-line gym equipment, and group classes that range from yoga and boxercise to TRX and high-intensity circuit training.

JAB Gym was founded by His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen who picked up his love of boxing during his time in the military. His passion is to get people moving, active, and fulfilling their potential. His Royal Highness has always been a keen sportsman and even bagged two bronze medals for Brunei as part of the country’s national polo team.

What do I love about the place? It’s where you can find Lex Igwe, a former Royal Marine who’s a Navy boxing champion as well as a Marine boxing champion.

Say hello to the first MMA gym in Tutong. Established in 2016, this gym also provides training for boxing, BJJ, NoGi, kickboxing and kendo.

What do I love about the place? It’s based in Tutong and led by an award-winning professional MMA athlete, Adib “Deep” Sulaiman.

Be prepared to be pushed to the limit at TKO Fitness, a boutique gym located near One Riverside. Led by professional trainers, TKO’s classes are derived from the fundamentals of boxing and functional fitness. They also offer high-impact group classes and personal training.

What do I love about this place? Spacious showers (and towels provided).

#5. Muhammad Irfan Boxing Gym

Address: Lot 7859, No 5, Simpang 106-27-10, RPN Kampong Pandan 7, Beverly Hills, Kuala Belait

Touted as the first boxing gym in Kuala Belait, Muhammad Irfan Boxing Gym is a high-performance training facility that provides boxing lessons for all levels and ages.It’s led by KB-resident, Muhammad ‘Irfan bin Haji Abdul Razak.

What do I love about the place? Who says there’s nothing to do in KB? Be sure to check out this boxing ring the next time you drop by Belait District.

#6. Khalifa Mixed Martial Arts

Address: Unit 10, 1st floor, Bangunan Arafah, Simpang 41-1-8, Jalan Kiarong

Khalifa Mixed Martial Arts offer a variety of classes at different rates and varying levels including Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Women Jujitsu, Kickboxing, HIIT, Submission Grappling, Kids Jiu Jitsu, etc.

What do I love about the place? Their classes and overall genre is quite holistic, from beginner, friendly to avid practitioners and to those who aspire to go professional. 

#7. Renegade Martial Arts Academy

Address: Unit 10, First Floor, Bangunan Warisan Jaya, Jln Kecil Tanjong Nangka, Kg Tanjong Nangka

Renegade Martial Arts Academy was established with the purpose of providing a training ground where one can learn the art of combat, have fun in the experience, make a commitment to that learning and to use the knowledge as a “stepping stone” to an improved self, family and community.

What do I love about the place? It offers a variety of classes to accommodate students of all ages and skill levels which include Muay Thai, Boxing and basic self-defence.

#8. 018 Mixed Martial Arts Academy 

Address: Unit 2 & 3, 1st Floor, Citis Square, Simpang 13-41, Jalan Airport, Kampong Jaya Setia

018 Mixed Martial Arts Academy offers a range of classes such as kids kickboxing, kids taekwondo, karate, boxing, ladies kickboxing, open kickboxing as well as HIIT / weight loss programmes. All classes include self-defence movements curated by certified coaches that are focussed on cardio, strength, focus and self-confidence.

What I love about the place? Conveniently located at Citis Square.

#9. Chain Block 

Address: No.1, Simpang 256-45-26-9, Rimba, Gadong 

Tucked away in Rimba, Chain Block is a neighbourhood gym that was founded way back in 1990.

What do I love about this place? It’s a no-frills gym with all the equipment you’ll need to sharpen your fighting skills.

#10. Project Mayham

Address: (Seria branch) Unit 05-35a to 05-38a, 4th Floor, Plaza Seria, Jalan Sultan Omar Ali. (Kiulap branch) Unit C8, Block C, 2nd Floor, Setia Kenangan 2

Starting out in 2015 in Belait District, Project Mayhem began with a single shop lot and expanded to four, to keep up with its growing followers.

According to Founder Aaron Lim, Project Mayhem specialises in Muay Thai, Boxing and Kickboxing classes. “We focus on proper techniques, form and the body’s kinetic chain of movement needed for execution of strikes and defence,” he said.

For parents who are interested in sending their children, Project Mayhem offers kids’ classes in their Seria Branch every Saturday afternoon.

What do I love about the place? It’s backed by Aaron, who in my opinion, is one of the most committed individuals in Brunei who’s determined to promote Muay Thai, boxing and K1 to the local community.

I’m still moved by what Aaron said during an interview with What’s Neue back in 2019

“Martial arts have had a positive impact on my life. I remain hopeful that martial arts would be able to change people’s lives (like how it saved me). I am determined to make everyone proud, especially those who have continued to believe in me over the years. I’m also determined to find a way to repay their faith in me,” he said during a #Neue9to5 interview.
